Ten

Marvin was up early, and the smell of fresh bacon drifted downstairs and woke up Rick. He had made breakfast sandwiches for everyone. Rick walked upstairs and joined him for some coffee. Jules slept a few more minutes but joined them shortly after. They all sat down for breakfast once Wendy returned from her morning walk.

They continued to talk music, and Marvin told him about a music hall his father used to own and that he worked at as a young guy. It was a total family operation. They hosted some of the biggest acts back in the day, including Hank Snow, who appeared there several times over the years. As they were finishing breakfast, Rick’s phone rang. It was the repair shop.

“Hello, Mr. Waters. You are ready to go. You can come pick up the Sprinter any time.”

“Thank you so much. We’ll be over soon.”

“I wish y’all could stay longer, but I know you have an agenda. I’ll run y’all over if you’re ready,” said Marvin.

“Yep, we need to hit the road. Lots of miles left to cross Canada. We can’t thank you enough for your hospitality,” said Rick.

They all hugged and pried Chief from Calvin’s cage. He wanted to hang more, but it was time to go. Rick thanked Marvin again at the shop and shook his hand. They knew from that day forward that they’d be lifelong friends.
